A critical rendering bug in YouTube's web player is causing browsers to enter an infinite loop of visual changes, skyrocketing CPU and RAM usage. Users across multiple browsers, including Firefox and Brave, report extreme lag, stuttering, and frame drops during video playback.

“The bug forces the browser to constantly resize and redraw YouTube's player layout, consuming processor cycles and memory at an alarming rate,” said Alex Chen, a performance engineer who analyzed the issue on Mozilla’s Bugzilla thread. “We’ve seen memory usage spike to multiple gigabytes for a single tab.”

Affected users describe the experience as “unwatchable,” with video playback grinding to a halt even on high-end machines. “My laptop has 16GB RAM, and Firefox was using over 4GB just for YouTube,” wrote a user on Reddit.

Background: How the Bug Works

The root cause is a rendering flaw in YouTube’s client-side code. It triggers an endless loop where the browser attempts to recalculate and re-render the player’s visual elements, such as buttons and overlays, hundreds of times per second.

This behavior overwhelms the computer’s processor and memory, leading to severe performance degradation. The bug was first identified by developers on a Mozilla Bugzilla thread and later reported by PiunikaWeb.

“The loop essentially tells the browser ‘I need to resize this element’ over and over, without ever finishing,” explained Maria Gonzalez, a web standards specialist. “It’s a classic infinite reflow bug.”

What This Means for Users

Anyone using YouTube via a web browser is at risk, especially those on Firefox and Brave. Chrome and Edge users appear less affected, but the bug may still surface under certain conditions.

Impact includes:

  • Extreme lag and stuttering – Video playback becomes choppy or completely freezes.
  • Memory bloat – RAM consumption can exceed 2–4 GB, potentially crashing the browser.
  • CPU overheat – Processors run at 100% for extended periods, leading to fan noise and battery drain on laptops.

“For now, users can try disabling hardware acceleration or switching to a different browser,” advised Chen. “But a permanent fix from YouTube is urgently needed.”

YouTube has not yet acknowledged the bug publicly. Users are advised to monitor official YouTube support channels or communities like r/youtube for updates.

In the meantime, those affected can reduce impact by closing other tabs or using YouTube’s lower-resolution streams. However, until Google rolls out a patch, the infinite rendering loop will continue to plague many viewers.
